Our authentic West African Black Soap brings together plant-derived oils and ash from materials such as plantain skins and cocoa pods. Its rustic texture and mottled brown appearance reflect its traditional character.

The Soap

Traditional Ingredients. Distinctive Character.

Our African Black Soap combines shea butter, palm-derived oils, coconut oil, plantain ash and cocoa pod ash.

The plant ash provides the alkaline material used in soapmaking, while the oils contribute to the finished bar. The result is a richly lathering soap that washes away everyday dirt and excess oil.

Its color can range from tan to deep brown, with darker flecks throughout. Despite its name, authentic black soap does not need to be uniformly black.

Different Shapes. The Same Promise.

Our bars vary in shape, thickness and appearance. Some are broad and flat; others are compact and chunky.

You will receive three bars totaling at least 15 ounces. Individual bars may vary in weight, but the combined weight will always meet or exceed the amount promised.

The photographs show examples of the soap’s appearance rather than identical shapes you should expect to receive.

A Little Lather Goes a Long Way

Wet your hands or a soft washcloth and work a small amount of soap into a lather. Gently cleanse, then rinse thoroughly.

Because traditionally made black soap can contain uneven particles, lather it in your hands rather than rubbing the bar directly against your skin.

Follow with your favorite moisturizer, such as our Shea Butter or Unscented Body Butter.

Start Gently

Black soap can feel strong or drying, and it will not suit everyone.

Patch test a small area before broader use. Begin with occasional use and adjust according to how your skin feels. Avoid the eyes and broken or irritated skin. If irritation occurs, discontinue use.

Storage and Care

Keep your soap dry between uses on a well-draining soap dish.

For convenience, separate a small piece for daily washing and store the remaining soap in a cool, dry place away from standing water.
